SURPRISE PARTY
A surprise 60th birthday party was organised for Ken Leahy last Saturday evening.
Forty friends and family members enjoyed a meal at the Globe Hotel restaurant, with everyone having a wonderful time catching up with those they hadn’t seen in a while.
Guests travelled for Ulladulla, Sydney, Yass and Wagga to celebrate with Ken.
Pictured in front with Ken and his wife Chris are their grandson Kynan and grand-daughter Maddison Leahy. Back (l to r - Toby McEvoy, Emma Leahy, Matt Leahy, Melanie Leahy, Stuart Leahy and Mandy McGuire.
SAD PASSING
Some of our readers might remember Hazel Kruger (Winchester), an English girl who came to Cootamundra about 58 years ago with her parents who were “ten pound Poms”, sponsored by the late Ken Forster of “The Willows”, where they were employed as a groom and domestic help.
Hazel worked for Ivan Hains in his law firm where she and Shirley Armstrong became friends.
Ian and Shirley Armstrong became close friends with Hazel and her late husband Dudley Kruger of Canberra.
Hazel passed away two weeks ago in Adelaide, where she had been living since Dudley’s death a few years ago.
She would have turned 80 on March 26.
90TH BIRTHDAY
Birthday wishes for a very happy birthday to Kathleen Hayward, who next Thursday will turn 90.
Kathleen’s son Noel and his wife Janine will be hosting a party at their home next Saturday where family and friends will celebrate this momentous occasion.
MARCH WEDDING
Ken and Chris Leahy are looking forward to more family time next weekend, with the wedding of their youngest son Stuart.
Stuart will marry Mandy, the daughter of John and Donna McGuire of Monteagle, at a ceremony to be held at Iandra Castle, Greenthorpe.
The castle will be open to all their guests with afternoon tea provided, and a reception will follow in Young.
After their honeymoon, Stuart and Mandy will reside in Yass.
SUCCESSFUL REUNION
John Young’un Kennedy had nothing but good things to say about the very successful seventh Coota Old Blokes reunion held at the Cootamundra Country Club on the weekend.
Ex-Cootamundrians travelled from far and wide to meet up with mates they hadn’t seen for many years or from last year (the reunion is held annually on the last weekend in February).
John made special mention of catching up with Warren Meale (now of Brisbane), Noel Edgar (Tamworth), and Peter and John Whitfield who live in Griffith.
Music for the Saturday night function was provided by “Beaconsfield Street”, consisting of several Coota Old Boys including Keith Holder (Wagga) and Cootamundra’s own Allan Thompson.
GIRAFFE AWARD
I’m sure that everyone has a story to tell about great customer service here in Cootamundra.
Like many other people, I like to hear how someone has gone that extra mile to be of assistance.
Well, last Friday my 15 year old son was home from college for the weekend, and looking forward to visiting Frank Hiscock’s Smash Repairs to see the progress on an old vehicle he had bought and taken there for respraying.
A chiropractor’s appointment took precedence, so Will couldn’t visit Hiscock’s on Friday.
But a call to Phil Summerfield resulted in Phil offering to open up shop on the Saturday for Will to see how things were going.
Will and I are aware that this was time out of Phil’s precious weekend and we appreciate it very much.
SPECIAL BIRTHDAY
A family barbecue was held last Sunday to celebrate the 85th birthday of local lady Joyce Steiger.
In attendance were her daughters Marg Somers and Carol Southwell, their husbands and children and children’s children!
Joyce is pictured here with nine of her great-grandchildren
UNIVERSITY STUDIES
Brittany Fraser, daughter of Leah Fraser of Cootamundra, completed her Year 12 studies at Hennessey College in Young last year.
She recently travelled to Canberra to receive a Scholarship award from Hennessey College, and is now attending Australian Catholic University in Canberra.
