RETIREMENT VILLAGE

It was lovely chatting with Betty Watts last week.

Betty is a resident at the Retirement Village, and she had not long returned from an organised bus trip to Junee to visit the Licorice and Chocolate Factory. Betty talked about how well looked after she is at the Retirement Village and how she enjoys being pampered – nailcare and hand massages her favourite.

COOTAMUNDRA VISITORS

Retired police officers who worked together at the Cootamundra Police Station in the 60’s and 70’s spent several days in Cootamundra last week.

Bruce and Laurie King (Yamba), Colin and Kerrie Gray (Canberra), Ross and Helen Webber (Forster) and Merv Braithwaighte (Dubbo) joined local couple Brian and Marie Holt for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, talking of the good old days of policing here.

Activities included a visit to the police station, an excursion to Pioneer Park, a visit to the Heritage Centre, dinners at the local service clubs and catching up with some of the locals.

The ladies also enjoyed the International Womens Day afternoon tea at The Arts Centre.

All wish to be remembered by their Cootamundra friends.

21ST BIRTHDAY

Celebrating her 21st birthday on Sunday was Rochelle Boyd.

Rochelle’s partner Tim Tobin, parents John and Tracey Boyd and brother Mitchell were there to wish her a very happy birthday along with other family members and her many friends.

CATCH-UP

Gordon Donaldson spent the weekend in Batemans Bay, catching up with Graham and Helen Bruce who were officers in the Salvation Army here in Cootamundra back in the 1990s.

Now retired, Graham and Helen are still involved with the Salvation Army, and enjoying life there on a beautiful part of the south coast.

WONDERFUL NEWS

Maurice Hanlon is happy to be home again after having spent close to six weeks recuperating in Woden Hospital and the Mercy Care Centre after receiving medical treatment.

Maurice is out and about and feeling so much better – good to hear you are on the mend, Maurie.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Christa Chapman, a Year 11 student at the Cootamundra High School, has been successful in gaining a place in the USB Young Women’s Leadership Academy to be held at Sydney University during the upcoming school holidays.

Over the five days Christa will be introduced to a group of contemporary women leaders, provided with leadership skills development and exposure to different industry and career pathways.

Well done Christa and enjoy your week away!

COOTAMUNDRA CONNECTION

‘Coota Valley Meats’ is a butchery that has been operating in Engadine for eight years now, and was so named because of a Cootamundra connection.

Proprietor Matthew Alewood explained to me that when the butchery was first opened, most of the beef and lamb sold there was produced in Cootamundra, so the name ‘Coota Valley Meats’ was relevant and had good connotations.

WELCOME VISITORS

Mick and Jeanette Howse, and Caroline Howse have had the pleasure of the company of their brother John and his wife Inger, who are currently holidaying in Australia.

John left Cootamundra in 1954 to ‘see the world’, travelling extensively in Europe.

He went to university in Montreal where he studied science, before continuing on to Vancouver to the University of British Columbia, before visiting Calgary where he obtained a job in the newspaper industry.

There John met his wife Inger, a journalist, with whom he had five children: Kim, Joe, Kaari, Jason and Tuan.

It is 56 years since John left Cootamundra, but having family and friends here, the connections run deep, with John’s last visit to Cootamundra three years ago.

Whilst in Australia, John and Inger have been based in Sydney and Cootamundra, visiting family and friends including his cousin David Power and his wife Annabelle who now reside in Bowral.

They also enjoyed a trip to Canberra where they visited Mick and Jeanette Howse’s son Stephen and his family.

Having been on holidays in Australia since January 31, John and Inger will spend their last day in Cootamundra tomorrow before returning home to Calgary, Alberta.
