2012 for the University of the Third Age (U3A) Cootamundra branch is shaping up to be a busy year for members.
U3A’s are voluntary, non-profit organisations which offer older people low-cost educational opportunities to keep their minds active.
The Cootamundra U3A formed in May 2010, with last year being the first full year of operation for the organisation.
The organisation is run by a small committee of volunteer members.
U3A secretary Helen Hamilton said last year was a fun and enjoyable year.
“We had a great time last year, membership has grown and we were able to attract some interesting lecturers and covered an array of topics.”
“With the time table for Term One almost complete it is already a full agenda with some interesting topics, so bring on 2012,” Mrs Hamilton said.
In 2011, people learnt to play Mah Jong, do yoga, and took part in tai chi, attempted to learn Spanish and did cryptic crosswords.
Members also enjoyed talks about local history, art, science, other countries, life experiences, Wiradjuri culture, psychology, bush poetry and current affairs, just to mention a few.
U3A is currently in recess and will resume this month.
Mrs Hamilton encourages anyone who may be interested in keeping their minds active in their senior years to get involved with U3A.
“U3A groups are open to anyone who is retired, or semi-retired who wants to keep learning and have an active mind. It is also a great way to meet people when we share a cuppa afterwards,” Mrs Hamilton said.
She said she is often asked by potential new U3A members whether there any tests or exams to do at the end of session.
“There are no tests or exams, but there are no awards either! If you want to learn about cryptic crosswords for instance, you would have to do some writing, but it is usually listening to talks and taking part in discussions.”
Mrs Hamilton said membership numbers for the U3A Cootamundra branch are continuing to grow.
With membership now being offered for half price, the committee is hopeful that more members will be attracted to join.
Mrs Hamilton encourages visitors and new members to come along and see what U3A is all about.
All lectures are held at the Stephen Ward Rooms.
U3A is a worldwide organisation which was started in France in the 1970s and began in Australia in 1984.
