 In the firing line

In the firing line

18 Nov, 2009 06:20 AM
ONE local teenager was involved in a lucky escape over the weekend when a bullet shot out of a small calibre firearm smashed through the rear windscreen of her Mitsubishi Lancer, shattering the glass and tearing through the headrest of the front passenger seat before lodging in the dashboard of the vehicle.

The car was parked on the railway line side of Bullecourt Street, opposite the house where the teenager lives with her family, when the bullet hit the vehicle.

If the car had not been parked where it had been the bullet would have been on course to smash through the front bedroom window of the teenager’s family home, where she was sleeping at what is thought to be the time the gun was fired.

The teenager noticed her car was damaged at approximately 6pm on Sunday with the incident through to have occurred on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

According to one Bullecourt Street resident gunshots were heard at approximately 2.30am on Sunday, however the late hour, combined with fans and air conditioners running on high due to the hot night prevented many residents hearing too much of what was happening outside.

Police were called and removed the bullet from the dashboard for further investigation.

The mother of the teenager whose vehicle was damaged had been away for the weekend and was shocked to find out what had happened to her daughter’s car, expressing concern at the fact someone with access to a gun had been shooting in the vicinity of a highly populated area.

It is thought the shooting was accidental, with one local resident reporting rabbits roam free in great numbers near the airport complex and railway line opposite the houses on Bullecourt Street and thus the culprit may have been shooting rabbits at the time the bullet went astray.

Police are calling on any member of the public with information about the incident to please come

forward.

Local police can be contacted on 6942 0099 or phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

DAMAGE SUSTAINED: in the middle of a residential area in town, a bullet fired from a small calibre firearm has smashed through the rear windscreen of a vehicle owned by a local teenager. The vehicle was the only thing preventing the bullet from rocketing through the front window of a home where an occupant was asleep.
