Old Blokes go around again

27 Jan, 2012 07:28 AM
WHAT started out as a way to get mates back together has evolved into one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the local calendar and the countdown is one to this year’s staging.

The ninth annual Coota Old Blokes No Frills Reunion will take place over the weekend of February 25 and 26 and organisers are again hoping for an excellent attendance of both current and former locals.

Spokesperson for the organising committee John ‘Youngn’ Kennedy said the weekend offers something for everyone.

“There are no real formalities involved,” Kennedy said.

“We meet at the Country Club around 1pm on the Saturday for a few drinks, a few bets for those who like a flutter and a general catch up.

“Finger food will be served during the afternoon while around 6.30pm a hot roast dinner will be served for those who wish to dine.

“After dinner a few, and I mean a few, words of welcome will be said before a minute’s silence will be observed for any Coota Old Blokes who have passed away over the years.”

Kennedy said the night will kick on to around midnight with background music for those who might want to ‘trip the light fantastic’.

Sunday is sports day, with the option of either golf or bowls from 9.30am.

“You don’t have to be a seasoned golfer or bowler to take part, it’s more of a fun game than serious competition,” Kennedy said.

“Over the years the Sunday morning show is what makes the weekend, so the more people who come along on Sunday the better.

“Even if the locals can’t get there on the Saturday, we’d love to see them on the Sunday.

“Last year it rained a bit so we canned the golf, but the bowls went ahead with plenty of laughter, some great bowls played and some ordinary deliveries.

“The winners were Peter Slavin and Neville ‘Speed’ Whitfield who were rugged hard players back in their league days but managed to keep that delicate touch

needed on the bowling green to come up trumps.”

Kennedy stressed that while it has been dubbed the “Old Boys reunion, the better halves are more than welcome.

“We’d love to see any wives and/or partners come along and join in the fun,” he said.

“It’s a chance for the girls to catch up as well and I can assure you there has been many a woman who has attended over the years.

“People don’t have to commit to the whole weekend - just come down when it suits you.”

The weekend will wind up with a relaxed afternoon of music at the Central Hotel where Dave and John Cook will provide the entertainment.

“Dave and John are former Coota residents and nothing pleases them more than performing for a ‘home’ crowd.
