WHEN the floods hit Queensland last year, a number of Cootamundra and Young tradies answered a call for help.
As families battled to get their lives back in order the Cootamundra and Young contingent, dubbed by the Queensland press “Saviours from the South”, packed up their tools and headed north with a strong dose of community spirit and a willingness to work hard as they lent a hand.
From Cootamundra Scott England, Todd Basham, Jason Baldock, Ryan Hobbs and Michael Knagge were amongst the first group to head to Queensland.
Ryan Hobbs, Mick McLaren, Todd Basham, Jason Baldock and Tom Cronin were amongst the second group to assist in Ipswich.
All of the guys were recognised
by Young Shire Council last week
during the town’s Australia Day celebrations.
The award was presented by Young Shire Councillor John McGregor who highlighted the work the group of men did.
Cr McGregor said the tradies raised close to $25,000 to assist with materials
to rebuild homes and Ipswich
infrastructure.
Initially the group planned just one four day visit, however the money raised by the community exceeded all expectations and covered an additional three trips.
All of the boys came back from Queensland with a renewed appreciation for what they have and how terrible the situation was for a those families devastated by the floods.
While they did not do what they did for the accolades – they simply wanted to lend a hand – there is no denying this award is justly deserved.
