POWERLESS - Surge zaps business

26 Jun, 2009 09:15 AM
THE power surge which caused havoc among Cootamundra businesses and nearby residences 12 days ago may have gone but its lingering effects are still being felt by at least one main street business.

Vicky and Jimmy Roberts, owners of Camera Art Photo and Imaging Centre, have been unable to fully operate their business since the surge knocked out their core business systems almost two weeks ago.

Currently unworkable but under repair are three Fuji kiosks, which clients self operate to order prints, a computer system and server, photo print lab and other miscellaneous equipment which has not operated since the surge occurred.

Mrs Roberts estimated that up to 90 per cent of her business revolved around the printing and processing of digital and film orders for clients.

“Now we can’t process anything,” Mrs Roberts said.

At the time of the power surge, when it was realised just how much damage had been caused to the business, Mrs Roberts said Country Energy acted quickly in assuring her they would repair the damage done.

“They were most apologetic and accepted that the power surge had caused the problem and promised to fix it,” Mrs Roberts said.

Now, almost two weeks on, the couple are worried that unless they are up and operating soon, they may never recover from the forced inactivity caused by Country Energy’s error.

To say the couple are frustrated would be an understatement but frustrated they are.

While conceding that local management have played their part in trying to keep them informed of where the repairs are up to, there has still been no contact from senior management or any indication given of when their business will be up and running again.

“We have a loyal customer base, but we can’t keep turning people away and expect those customers to continue to wait,” Mrs Roberts said.

“They have to find alternatives and if they go somewhere else, will they come back?” she queried.

Mrs Roberts said she has reluctantly had to stand down her sole employee due to the lack of activity in the shop.

“The only thing I have now is the retail side of things, I can’t do anything else,” she said.

In fact, the only equipment that does work in the store at the moment are the lights, heaters, phone and EFTPOS machine according to Mrs Roberts and even the phone has had to be replaced.

“It is just so disheartening, we’ve been in business for two years and worked really hard to upgrade our equipment and build relationships with our customers and it has all just ground to a halt,” she said.

A Country Energy spokesperson has told the Herald that they have been working closely with all their customers that were affected by a fault on the Country Energy network, including the owners of the Camera Art Centre.

“Country Energy has been working one on one with all involved to ensure everything possible is being done to restore equipment to the same level of operation as before the fault occurred,” the spokesperson said.

“Some of the effected equipment is very specialised and further consultation with technicians in these specific fields has been sought by Country Energy.”

Country Energy says they have contacted these third party specialists to ensure delivery and resolution times are the quickest time frames possible.

“Country Energy has gained assurances from these experts that they are working to support Country Energy’s efforts to resolve any outstanding matters.

“Country Energy will continue to work closely by regular contact with the owners of Camera Art Centre of Cootamundra and assist where possible to reinstate equipment,” the spokesperson said.
