THE Cootamundra Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group makes a big difference to the lives of many disabled people in town.
The interaction with the horses and the ability to be part of a group activity does wonders for the confidence, happiness and physical aptitude of participants.
This group would not be able to function without the generous support of the community.
Last week, Sacred Heart Central School students made a $300 donation to the organisation following a uniform free day at the end of term three.
They chose to support RDA after working with the students at Elouera and realising the benefit of the organisation to the Elouera students.
Doreen O’Connor, who has been part of RDA since it began in Cootamundra 21 years ago, said the organisation was most grateful for the generous donation from the students.
Currently RDA is on a summer break and is set to recommence when the school term starts back, depending on the weather. Mrs O’Connor indicated the season will not start back if the weather is too hot.
She said next year a number of new people have indicated their intention to join the group.
“We will have 24 clients next year which is wonderful,” Mrs O’Connor said.
With more clients, however, comes the need for more horses and RDA will look at adding to their stable of horses next year.
RDA is utilised by people of all ages. Cootamundra is fortunate to be able to offer not only horse riding but also the chance for participants to sit in the buggy, which means people who may not have the physical ability to ride can still benefit from interaction with the horses.
