COOTAMUNDRA’S creeks turned into rivers and paddocks were transformed into flood plains when Cootamundra received massive amounts of rain last weekend.
Only one week into the month of March, already a total of 127.8mm has been recorded so far (as at
yesterday), with 126.6mm of
this total being received last
weekend.
To date this year, Cootamundra has recorded a total of 305.8mm of rain, the most rainfall received in the first three months of the year in 60 years.
Cootamundra is only 10mm behind the first quarter record of 314.4mm set in 1950
The record for March rainfall stands at 274mm, also set in 1950.
Cootamundra Shire Council Works Manager Mark Ellis said the town’s storm water drainage system did exceed its drainage capacity taking some time to catch up, as a result of the downpour.
Shire areas greatly affected by the rain included Hume Street, Florence Street, Southee Circle, Gundagai Road, Turners Lane, Jugiong Road, Stockinbingal and Cootamundra’s central business district.
Many of the local creeks and causeways were still flowing on Monday and Tuesday, starting to recede on Tuesday afternoon.
