Coota to host Stribley Shield final

01 Feb, 2012 07:50 AM
COOTAMUNDRA will host arch rivals Wagga in this year’s Stribley Shield final following a crushing victory over Temora on Sunday.

With staging rights up for grabs, the Coota side made light work of their opponents, restricting the home side to just 103 before

passing the total with six wickets to spare.

Temora players and officials were quick to point out they fielded a below strength side and there were some obvious absentees, however the Coota team was also minus a couple of key regulars and the reality is you can only play what’s in front of you.

The victory was set up by

another superb spell of bowling from string bean quick Dean Bradley

Relishing the chance to play at a higher level, Bradley took the first five wickets to fall, eventually

finishing with 5-33 off nine overs, three of which were maidens.

Had it not been for a rare piece of stick from Brady Oliver who blasted two fours and a six off the first four balls of Bradley’s fifth over, his figures could have been better.

It mattered little as Bradley

produced the perfect reply, skittling Oliver’s stumps with the very next ball and then sending Oliver’s younger brother Joe back to the pavilion for a golden duck.

The haul represented Bradley’s third five-for in as many Stribley Shield games this season,

forcing resident cricket guru Pat Kerin to scour the record books in an attempt to find the last time a First XI bowler has taken three

successive five wicket totals.

Having gone wicket-less in the opening rep match of the season, the thrilling tie in the Country Plate, Bradley has taken 5-31 against Gundagai and 5-18 against Wagga.

Sam Kerry was the best of the Temora batsmen, outlasting five partners on his way to 27, while tailenders Justin Kerry and Nick Grant added some respectability

to the total with 19 and 10 respectively.

Cootamundra skipper wasted no time with the reply, his first three scoring shots being four, six and four, however he fell in the next over without adding to his tally.

Fellow opener Josh Purtell then combined with Adam Twyford to push the score to 36 before the

latter went for four, while Matt Berkrey made more of an even combination in the 33-run third wicket stand he shared with Purtell, Berkrey making 17.

Mick Cronin for six went with the score on 78, however Purtell and Nathan Corby, who had earlier proved a perfect foil for Bradley with 3-17, ensured the total was reached without further loss.

For the second time in as many games Cory brought up the winning runs with a six as he raced past Purtell to finish unbeaten on 24, his partner not out on 23.

Wagga proved they will be a formidable finals opponent after they chased down a sizeable total set by Tumut.

With the winner of this match to advance to the decider, Tumut would have been thrilled after posting 223 and then having Wagga in trouble at 5/60, however they recovered to win by four wickets with several overs to spare.

The February 12 match will represent the first home final for Coota since 2005/06 when they defeated Wagga by 100 runs.

That win was Coota last Stribley Shield title, while Wagga haven’t won the shiel since 2000/01 when they defeated Coota by three runs.
