Cream is rising to the top in Cricketer of the Year

27 Jan, 2012 06:39 AM
HOW would you go selecting a cricket team out of this lot?

Scott Roberts, Scott Meale, Matt Berkrey, Shane O’Brien, Matt Schofield, Brendan O’Callaghan, Sam Annetts, Nathan Corby, Nathan Schofield, Dean Bradley, Adam Twyford, John Stephens and Justin Hampton.

It’s a pretty impressive list to choose from and it’s no coincident that the 13 above

mentioned players are serious contenders for this year’s Cootamundra Herald Cricketer of the Year.

Six votes is all that separates the baker’s dozen, several of who staked a claim for one of the highest individual honours on offer each season with impressive performances on the weekend.

Berkrey and Matt Schofield both claimed man-of-the-match honours, Berkrey for his 43 in Big O Blues’ 28-run win over Ex-Services Bushrangers, and Schofield for his 4-16 and 44 as Harden downed Wallendbeen by three wickets.

Berkrey’s collect sees him move to 11 votes and just two in arrears of leader Scott Roberts, while Schofield has cracked it for double figure going from seven to 10.

Wallendbeen’s Shane O’Brien, whose 39 made up more than half the villager’s total of 76, was awarded the two votes from the match and sits on the same line as Berkrey on 11 points, while former Cricketer of the Year Bradley edged himself one closer to the

leaders with a four-wicket haul.

O’Callaghan was content to play second fiddle to Isaac Mitchell who was the star for Stock with an unbeaten 75 against Big O Burglars, O’Callaghan taking the two for his 20 not out and 3-16 to join Matt Schofield and his Stock teammate Sam Annetts on 10 votes.

Mitchell’s man-of-the-match effort saw him open his COY account for the year, as did Central Tigers batsman Liam Frilay who

produced his best effort of the season with 27 runs as the Tigers easily accounted for

Ex-Services Young Guns.

Stephen Chant (Tigers) and John Heaton (Young Guns) completed a clean sweep of first time vote-collectors, Chant grabbing two for his 21 and two wickets and Heaton the minor vote for his 26.

With one round remaining before the

competition splits in two for the Merrin and Sparre Cup, votes from this week’s games will be published in the Herald next week, however from that point on voting will go behind closed doors with the final three rounds to be announced at the annual

presentation dinner.
