DESPITE losing a cluster of wickets with close to half of the target still to be hunted down, Merrin Cup premiers Big O maintained their undefeated status for the 2009/10 season with a nerve-
racking two wicket win over the Globe Hotel at Fisher Park on Saturday.
Chasing 140 for victory, Big O exploded out of the blocks to have their hands well and truly around the throats of their rivals, the score reading 2-70 after just 10 overs.
However, in the space of six overs the momentum had shifted significantly as Big O lost a further four wickets for the addition of just 11 runs.
Aaron Kemp was responsible for three of the
victims, having Dean Guthrie (0), Craig McTavish (1) and opener Scott Meale (24) all caught off
lofted shots, while Will Hobbs removed the dangerous Tony O’Dwyer (31) who, until that point, looked as though he could reel in the runs himself.
Effectively it was the innings of Michael Buttriss that saved Big O from suffering their first defeat of the year.
A regular opener over the past few summers who only knows one way to bat which is aggressively, Buttriss was listed at number eight on the weekend and together with new recruit Brendan McAtear stabilised the Big O innings with a 44-run stand.
As expected, Buttriss swung the willow wildly at any loose deliveries, netting him four boundaries in a game-changing 29, while McAtear showed great touch in his equally as important 14.
Taking first use of the wicket, the Globe side was in the position to place pressure firmly on their more fancied opponents.
Four of the top five batsmen made starts, however with a big score from any of the quartet there for the taking, Josh Purtell’s 35 was the best.
Purtell and Jason Gillies (17) added 40 for the first wicket, while Hobbs and Purtell then pushed the score along to 88 just past the halfway mark of the innings.
Hobbs was bowled by Dean Guthrie for 22, while without any addition to the score Purtell was lured out of his crease by former First XI tweaker Pete Campbell and was well stumped by fill-in keeper Scott Meale.
Kemp batted through the remainder of the innings to finish unbeaten on 29, however with Guthrie taking four wickets, Buttriss three and Campbell two, the Big O attack put the skids on what should have been a much higher total.
The Big O boys can now enjoy a weekend off with the bye, while the Globe side faces a pumped up Country Club Cougars.
