SYDNEY Sixers put an exclamation mark on this year’s Australia Day seven-a-side cricket carnival with an emphatic victory over Wallendbeen Wackers in last Thursday’s final.
Having been reborn last year, the 2012 tournament saw an excellent field of 14 teams battle it out at three venues, all
hoping to top their pool and qualify for the finals.
At the end of the preliminary matches, Sixers (Albert Park), Wackers (Mitchell Park) and Gang Green (Fisher Park) were the best performed sides, with the Wackers needing just six of their seven overs to eliminate Gang Green in the preliminary final.
Having finished with the best nett run rate for the day and subsequently taken the direct path into the decider, Sixers claimed wickets at regular intervals to see the Wackers post a moderate, but possibly tricky total of 44.
Highlighting how impressive the Sixers bowling was in the decider is the fact not one of the seven players went for more than 10 an over, with Steve Chant the surprise packet with 2-4, while Aaron Vitnell 1-4, Nathan Corby 1-5 and James Dunk 1-5 were also economical.
Likewise there were no double figure totals in the batting column with Ray James top scoring with nine and Jason Gillies and Chris Hourn making seven apiece.
The Wackers knew early wickets were vital if they were to be any hope of
defending their total, however it wasn’t to be as Corby and Matt Berkrey went on a two-man wrecking mission.
Berkrey was the more aggressive of the two with two boundaries and one towering six off the bowling of Gillies as he finished unbeaten on 34.
He also made his partner run hard between the wickets, with close to half of their runs coming in twos and threes.
Corby remained unbeaten on 12 however the carnival was essentially about fun and for the most part that is exactly what
players from all 14 teams enjoyed.
