Three grounds needed for Oz Day Sevens

Three grounds needed for Oz Day Sevens

25 Jan, 2012 06:45 AM
WITH nominations for tomorrow’s Ex-Services Seven-a-side cricket competition peaking at 14, organisers are thrilled that they have to use three venues to accommodate the masses.

The number of teams represents four more than last year’s return

competition and included one side from Canberra that has been organised by former local Rodney Melmoth.

Six teams will battle out round robin matches at Albert Park, while four will take to the wicket at both Fisher Park and Clarke Oval, with the best

performed team at each venue

qualifying for the finals.

The team with the most wins and best run rate will advance directly to the final, which has been scheduled for 5.45pm, while the other two

qualifiers will play in the preliminary final an hour earlier, with both feature matches to be played at Albert Park.

In the only rule change from last year a super over will be played in the event of a draw in any game.

All players and supporters are

invited back to the major sponsor, the Ex-Services Club, for post match drinks from 7pm.

While several teams wish to play their cards close to their chest and not reveal their big guns, the Herald can reveal one side from each venue which could prove hard to beat.

At Albert Park Sydney Sixes have a mixed bag with James Dunk, Aaron Byrne, Nathan Corby and Steve Chant among their starters; while at Fisher Park MVD’s are expected to do well with Willie Purcell, Andrew Parkinson and Ricky Evans their keys.

The highlight match at Clarke Oval will be the one between village

rivals Wallendbeen Wackers and Wallendbeen Hotel, with the Wackers pinning their hopes on Tim Hudson, Chris Hourn and Richie McGowan.

Any current cricketers not involved in teams tomorrow but may like to help out on the day with umpiring or

scoring would be made most welcome and can contact carnival coordinator Pat Kerin for more details.

There was talk about trying to play all games at two venues (Albert Park and Fisher Park), however it would have been too long a day with games starting at 8am and finishing at 7.15pm
