CALLING ALL SPORTSPEOPLE

IF there’s one sporting event the good people of Cootamundra should throw their support behind this year - it’s this one.

An event that could see more than 250 participants join together to raise funds for the most worthy of causes, the local branch of Can Assist.

The brainchild of Ian Saunders, the plan is to have 164 golfers grace the fairways of the Cootamundra Golf Course on Saturday, November 21 and another 84 lawn bowlers take to the greens the following day.

It’s an ambitious goal, but one Ian is hell bent on achieving, knowing too well the fantastic job Can Assist does for the people of Cootamundra.

“Cootamundra CanAssist or CPAS as it was

previously known, has existed since 1984 and over the past 25 years has provided direct financial

support for cancer patient treatment in the Coota

district totaling $664,000,” Saunders said.

“This year to date $63,000 has been provided for care, travel, accommodation and prescription costs to a large number of cancer sufferers within the local community.

“Having received the help of the organisation, this (organising the events), is my way of giving

something back.”

Saunders and a small, but dedicated band of helpers have been canvassing businesses within town seeking support for the events.

“The response from the business community has been phenomenal, with more than $5000 already committed to the weekend,” he said.

“We are hoping to raise a total of $9000 and I am confident of reaching that figure.”

The golf event will be played as a four-person ambrose, with a minimum of two current golfing members within each group.

“I am appealing to all golfers to get behind this cause, whether they be weekly regulars, former members who haven’t played for a while or purely social players.

“I want to see the starting sheet full and flood the course with players.”

Players have the option of two block tee times, 7am to 8am and 10.30am to 12.30pm, with the cost set at $60 per team.

“I’d love to see some of the local businesses enter teams, while it also a chance for those golfers playing in the Twomey Patterson Twilight competition to take on the challenge of playing 18 holes,” Saunders said.

Sunday’s bowls tournament will be played in a triples format commencing at 1pm.

“Again the event is open to bowlers and non bowlers alike and is an opportunity for those who have never tried their hand at lawn bowls to give it a go,” Saunders said.

Cost is $30 per team, which includes a steak sandwich prior to play.

Saunders has secured two fantastic prizes for raffles to be held over the course of the weekend.

“There will be a raffle on the Saturday for the golfers and another on the Sunday for the bowlers and, without wanting to give too much away, I can tell you the prizes are certainly worth winning,” he said.

“Every player automatically gets a ticket into their respective raffle, while extra tickets can be purchased each day.”

Preparing to put the finishing touches on the weekend, Saunders has asked any local businesses who were contacted by letter in regards to sponsorship that may not have replied to call him on 6942 3564 or 0488 423 565.
