FATHER AND SON LYNCHED THEIR RIVALS IN CUP FINAL

21 Oct, 2009 07:18 AM
THE father and son pairing of Greg R and Greg M Lynch won the prestigious Farmer Cup golf matchplay title for a second time when they accounted for the tried and tested combination of Garry Mason and Russell Peck on Saturday.

In a match fitting of any finale, it was a four hole stretch and a brilliant back nine by the elder of the Lynchs that set up the four-and-two victory, allowing them to add the 2009 title to the one they won five years ago.

It was anything than an ideal start from the Lynchs as Mason and Peck jumped to a two up lead after the opening two holes.

A par to Peck on the first and a birdie to Mason on the second where he rolled in a 15 foot putt, gave the nominal favourites the early advantage, however the Lynchs replied by claiming the next two holes.

Greg senior fired a great shot into the third, the ball finishing just three feet from the pin, while a bogey to Greg junior on the fourth was enough to give his team victory as he had a shot on his rivals.

The up and down nature of the match continued with a Mason par on the fifth edging his team back in front, but a birdie four on the par-five sixth to Greg senior again had the match all square.

The seventh and eighth were halved, but when Peck parred the tough ninth, they would take a slender one up lead into the tougher back nine.

Peck made a clutch putt for par on 10 to keep he and Mason in front as both Lynchs bogeyed the hole with a shot, however it was from the next tee that the nature of the match would change.

All four players found the fairway off the tee, albeit one of the Lynchs getting a lucky break through the trees, however neither Mason or Peck were able to capitalize by hitting the green.

The result was a pair of pars to the two Gregs and the match was back at all square with seven to play.

With Peck the only player to hit the dance floor from the tee on 12, he had the upper hand, but a superb chip from Greg senior, giving him a tap in for par, and a subsequent three putt from Peck saw the Lynchs in front for the first time in the match.

They capitalized on this with a win on the 13th courtesy of a well constructed birdie to Greg junior and when he added another victory on the 14th with a bogey and a shot, the momentum of the match had swung decidedly in the Lynchs’ favour as they were now three up.

The 15th was halved leaving the Lynchs ‘dormie three’ (three up with three to play) and fittingly it was Greg senior, who easily played the best golf of the four for the day, who sealed victory when he made par on the long par-3 16th.

Finishing off his round with a par and bogey, Lynch senior had accumulated 23 points out the back, giving him 41 for the day which was enough to see him claim the overall prize (on a countback) as well.

While that may have been rewarding, it was the

opportunity to win one of the most time-honoured trophies in the club with his son for a

second time that gave Greg

senior the greatest satisfaction.
