Scott Fuller four-peat

03 Mar, 2010 07:21 AM
COOTAMUNDRA golfers are celebrating an historic ‘four-peat’ win in the Scott Fuller Shield competition after a fifteen point victory over Tumut on Sunday.

Cootamundra fielded 32 pairs and with only the best ten cards from either club counting in the score run down, posted 483 points to Tumut’s 468.

A sensational round by Anthony Dean and Phil Gay, paved the way for the win with the pair carding a whopping 57 points.

The duo’s front nine score of 33 followed up with a back nine of 24 points included two holes on which they carded just one point and three holes on which they scored just two per hole.

Club captain Garry Mason said he was pleased with the numbers turning out for Cootamundra on the weekend.

“We had good numbers on the course on Saturday and obviously they all turned up again on Sunday which helped get us across the line,” Mason said.

The top ten cards from Cootamundra ranged from 57 points to 46 with a number of players breaking their handicaps in the process though none so thoroughly as Dean who will have seven shots cut from his previous handicap of 34.

The competition final was played in a condensed format after the first of the two round home and away series set down for the Cootamundra course was rained out.

This left both Cootamundra and Tumut unsuccessfully searching for an alternative date before both clubs agreed to play a one round final with each team competing on their home track on Sunday.

Mason said while Cootamundra were happy with the win, there is concern over the abbreviated final series with both Cootamundra and Tumut eager to investigate alternatives with the South West committee to prevent problems in the future.

The event this year was plagued by erratic field numbers through all clubs with Cootamundra facing a large deficit after their opening round at Temora and Young struggling when they travelled to Cootamundra.

“This is a matter of concern and something we’ll be taking up with the South West,” Mason said.

The top ten cards for Cootamundra on Sunday were P Gay/A Dean 57, B Carberry/D Morgan 49, J Gordon/R Buttriss 49, N Potter/B Potter 48, P Glanville/G Rumble 47, G Lynch/R Hargraves 47, J Smith/G Cheshire 47, P Black/L Black 47, S Buttriss/S Buttriss 46, D Caldwell/R Adams 46.
