COOTAMUNDRA golfers will head to the hills on Sunday for the third and final round of this year’s Scott Fuller Shield, however it won’t just be the happenings at Tumut that will command attention.
Although they have dominated their own pool, which also includes Tumut and Gundagai, Coota find themselves trailing traditional rivals Young who have been teamed against Harden and Temora.
With the averages for each town added together to give a final total, Young holds a 1.5 point advantage with 87.86 against Coota’s 86.36.
Basically that means Coota must average more than 1.5 points better
per side than Young for Coota’s
stranglehold on the shield to continue.
The first obstacle is the tough and undulating Tumut lay out, while the biggest hurdle Coota golfers will face is the fact Young are at home for the final round.
While the odds may be stacked against Coota it hasn’t stopped local players from mounting a serious assault, with more than 20 teams expected to make the hour long trek.
Many of the teams are the same as which flooded the course at Coota two weeks ago when the home club
combined for a massive 1231 points at an average of 43.96, while there have been a couple of slight changes.
Matt Perry has ditched Bob Glanville in the hope Les Black can provide more support, while, after being unavailable for the last round, Steve Johnson has rekindled his
partnership with Daryl Sedgwick.
Young is expected to have big
numbers as they try to win the coveted shield for the first time in more than a decade, however with every team’s score contributing to the average, this could work against them.
Regardless of what happens in Young in seems the Coota sides will have to combine for an average of 44 or more if they are to steal victory.
