Rain again impacted on Maestros

22 Feb, 2012 07:55 AM
FOR the second time in as many weeks, rain forced the abandonment of matches in the Ex-Services Maestros, with bowlers sent scampering from the green on Friday night.

Those games were due to be completed last night, while last Thursday night saw the continuation of games that were washed out the previous weeks.

Most matches had seen around 15 to 17 ends completed and, with the exception of perhaps one game, the players who were leading at the time of the wash out carried that form through to win the match.

Host club players Bruce Gillies and Ian Fulmer moved through to the final eight in the Major division, Gillies downing

another Ex-Services Club player in Adam New 32-9, while Fulmer held off the

challenge of Harden’s Tom Apps 31-27.

Gillies finished off in style, collecting 10 shots over the final four ends, while Fulmer edged ahead with a maximum count of four on the 27th end and kept slightly in front before closing out the match with a three and a one.

Two of the four Minor division matches lasted 36 ends, with Wal Chater advancing to the quarter finals 31-23 over Danny Vincent and Neville Stubbs winning a

second round match against Harden’s Rod Cooper 31-25.

Chater led 23-9 after 20 ends, before Vincent got back to within five at 27-22 after 33, but Chater won two of what proved to be the final three ends.

Stubbs took a 7-6 lead after seven ends, added another four on the next and was never headed for the remainder of his match, however five collects in six ends, including a four, had Cooper just one in arrears at 29-28, before two singles to Stubbs saw the pair shake hands.

One of the home club’s keenest bowlers Peter Hoang is also into the quarters

following a impressive 32-21 win over the experienced Jim Deacon from Stock, while Harold Anderson ended Ron Bennett’s run 31-25.

Hoang picked up the better in the re-start, restricting Deacon to just a handful of

successful ends and went from 24 to his

winning total in five ends via collects of three, three and two.

Anderson was in front for all but the first end against Bennett and enjoyed sizeable gaps, nine after 12, 12 after 19 and eight after 24, the match all over on the 27th after a single.
