THEY have played with and against each other numerous times over the years and are regarded as players of similar ability, however it was Laurie Smith who earned the bragging rights when he downed Rodney Crowe 31-14 in Friday night’s round of Ex-Services Maestros matches.
The only Major division game listed for play, it appeared a tight contest was on the cards as the first five ends resulted in singles with Smith holding a 3-2 lead, while at the completion of the 12th end Crowe had edged in front 9-8.
The match then took a dramatic turn, with Smith winning the next four ends, three of which were threes, to double his opponent’s score at 18-9 and, while Crowe replied with a three of his own on the 17th end, Smith rattled off a winning sequence of five to move within four of victory at 27-12.
Desperate to stay in the hunt, or at least add some respectability to the score, Crowe grabbed a two on the next, however all the momentum was with the host club’s bowls president who wrapped up the match with a two and two singles.
The most amazing of the Minor
singles matches came on rink five when Col Luck needed just 19 ends to end Garry Cassidy’s campaign 32-4.
Cassidy was limited to four single collects, while Luck collected
multiple scores on all but four of his winning ends.
The win has seen Luck move into the round of 16 and if he can maintain that form he has to be regarded as a top chance.
Stockinbingal’s Richie Larsen was also in dominant form, needing just 24 ends to defeat Rob Hillier 32-9.
Trailling 6-0 after three ends,
Hillier grabbed successive twos to
narrow the gap, however the village representative then won nine of the next 11 ends to take the match away from his rival at 23-6.
Larsen added a multiple count on the 20th end and finished the match in style with a three.
The longest match of the night saw Tony Curtis and Harden’s Craig Phyllis battle it out for 36 ends before Curtis prevailed 32-25.
Multiple scores were hard to come by over the first 16 ends, with both players grabbing a three and a two to see Phyllis lead 13-9, however Curtis pegged back the difference in one end and then went four ahead on the next.
A three count three ends later gave him the biggest lead of the match at
22-15, however with singles again dominating the score card, Phyllis had clawed his way back to 26-23 in arrears at the start of the 31st end.
Curtis won five of the next six to set up a second round encounter with Jack Forbutt.
A blistering start from experienced Stockinbingal player Jim Deacon always had him in the box seat against Harden’s Graham Murray.
Deacon won all but five of the first 15 ends to be just 10 shots short of
victory at 21-6 and, while Murray staged a brave comeback by winning the next six ends to trim the deficit to four, Deacon regained his composure to close out the match 31-18 after 28 ends.
The remaining matches saw John Curtis defeat Bimby Martin 31-17 after grabbing the lead on the sixth end and never being headed again; while Peter Hoang made an impressive debut into the Maestros ranks with a 31-18 win over Harden’s Tony Madden.
Hoang was a late replacement for Kim Roberts.
Due to some games being washed out last week, extra matches have been scheduled for this week in an attempt to catch up.
