CENTRAL Bolt proved they are on course for a possible grand final appearance in this year’s A grade touch football competition by staving off the challenge of one of their main rivals last week.
In arguably the match of the round on Thursday night Bolt downed Central Snakes 6-4 to draw level with Snakes on 13 competition points.
Jamin Hall was rated as the game’s best ‘by a mile’, the former Bulldog and Tricolour scoring two tries himself and having a hand in a couple of others.
Steve Chant matched Hall’s effort with a double, while singles to Haydn Cowled and Jesse Turner saw a two-try margin at the end.
The Snakes were in the contest for a long way, with Chris Maher, Luke Storrier, Ashley Minehan and Matt Forsyth all capping strong games by crossing the chalk.
Country Club Mambos remain as the surprise
ladder leaders in pool one on 14 points courtesy of a draw and four wins, the latest being a 5-2 effort against Central Sinkers.
The blend of experience and youth in the Mambos outfit should see them remain competitive in the top grade when the division is made, with Chris Dawe and Dave Garness with two each and Jeremy Roberts with one grabbing the spoils last week.
Ben Darling pegged back one try after Mambos had jumped to a 3-0 lead, while Tim Maguire was
the last to score when he found a gap through the usually reliable defence.
Charlie Booth and Craig McTavish played well for the winners, as did Hayden Bennett and Jarrad Paterson for Sinkers.
Last year’s B grade premiers Central Punters finally broke their duck for the season, their maiden win coming at the expense of Cooper’s Carters 5-2.
Youngster Joe Lewis grabbed a crucial double for Punters, while Rodney Buttriss used a combination of individual speed and good finishing ability to match Lewis’ effort, with Punters final point coming from Mark Thompson.
Andrew Adams was the star for Carters, turning back the clock to the glory days at Country Club Oval when he was the self-appointed halfback for the Tricolours reserve grade, weaving his way through the defence for two silky tries.
Ashley Cooper, Scott England, John Piffero and Wayne Berkrey gave Adams solid support, however it was to be the Punters’ night.
The crossover match for the round saw Central Storm run in six tries to Hammerheadz’s one.
With the match featuring some of the best young talent in town, Alex Jones was the only multiple scorer for the winners with two, as Dylan McDermott, Jordyn Ballard, Jono Rickett and Brad Lange added one to the tally.
Toby Johnston was the only player able to crack the Storm defence, while Ewen Porteous, Joel Fuller and Jackson Duncombe played well.
