Carters struck first but Mambos home in the end

18 Jan, 2012 07:33 AM
COUNTRY Club Mambos were given an early scare in last week’s round of men’s pool one touch matches, however class prevailed in the end as they romped away with a 6-3 victory over competition cellar dwellers Cooper’s Carters.

In an unexpected start, Carters struck the first blow when fearless team leader Ashley Cooper

provided a brilliant try assist for the ever present Tim Condon who beat the cover defence to score.

If that wasn’t enough to excite the fans, the next passage of play was as Mambos big man pinched an intercept out of thin air and raced the length of the field (yes full length) to square the ledger.

Mambos hit the lead when Todd Basham made a break around the ruck, ran 40 metres and off-loaded to David Harris in support, before Dawe bagged his second courtesy of another intercept.

It is about know that this writer is believing the sideline scribe may be taking his own version of journalistic license, however any comments are

better than none.

Dawe brought up his hat trick to give Mambos a comfortable 4-1 lead, this time running a more believable two metres before collapsing over the line, before Jaques Scholtz finished off a well

executed set piece for Carters and dived full stretch to score.

Determined not to let Dawe hog all the headlines, teenager David Garness ran in a double, while to cap an entertaining affair Carters’ debutant Antoine (no surname given) found a late gap in the defence.

The remaining two pool one games were

mismatches of mammoth magnitudes, with Central Storm keeping stablemates on the flash and bagging 13 of their own, while in another all-Central affair, Snakes pummelled Punters 13-1.

Storm have no trouble in finding the stripe this season, their baker’s dozen last week taking their tally to 54, with Dan Maher and Brad Lange each adding three to their individual totals.

Ben Guthrie, Jake Lewis and Dylan McDermott were close behind with two each, while Jono Rickett may have felt left out despite crossing for one.

Sinkers had plenty of practice tapping off and when they were in attack Dean Moston, Steve Close and Dan Craft looked dangerous, however the Storm defence was relentless and refused to let them cross.

It was also going to be a case of ‘how far’ when Snakes lined up against Punters on ground one, the first of the 13 touchdowns coming in the opening minute.

The Snakes literally had a field day with most players recording multiple tries, with James Minehan and Luke Storrier the best with three each.

Between them the pair now have 17 tries to their credit, with Ashley Minehan leading the team

challenge on 12 after collecting another double last week.

Punters’ only moment of joy came when Mick Simons plopped himself over the line and, while there was plenty of doubt about the legitimacy of the try, neither the referees or the opposition were about to argue.

Also doing their best in trying circumstances for Punters were Mark Ballard, Joey Lewis and Peter Guthrie.

Draw for tomorrow

Gr 2 Central Storm v Central Snakes (Hammerheadz)

Gr 3 Cooper’s Carters v Central Sinkers (Dirty Ds)
