ON PAPER they almost look unbeatable, however there’s no such thing as a certainty in sport.
The 2009/10 men’s touch football competition swings into action tomorrow night and the team everyone is talking about in terms of potential A grade premiers is the Coota Hotel.
With all divisions adopting the six-a-side format this summer, the thought process is the fittest, fastest and most skillful teams will flourish.
The Coota Hotel side ticks all the boxes and more.
Made up exclusively of Coota Bulldogs stars, the Coota Hotel are one of four teams that have been drafted into the elite A grade division.
Boasting players such as Nathan McGowan, Brent Lange, Grant Miller, Joel Pettit and Grant Boyd, the Coota Hotel will start each match as undeniable favourites.
The only problem they could encounter is sharing the game time equally among themselves as their nomination form listed the full compliment of 14, meaning eight players could be forced to watch on from the sideline at any given time.
Also grouped in the premier division are Globe Hotel Poachers, Family Hotel and X Rated.
Of those Poaches looked to be the greatest threat to Coota Hotel’s domination, with Steve Chant, Joe Bradley, Mick Glanville and Aaron Byrne tipped to be even more lethal in terms of attack with just six defenders on the opposite side of the field.
Also included on the team list are Brendan Gale and Jamin Hall whose experience can’t be
questioned, as well as Jake Walsh, Chris Maher and Matt Forsyth.
However, that latter trio also appears on the nomination form for Family Hotel and it will be interesting to see which side they actually turn out for.
Warner brothers Ben and Tom will look to lead from the front, while the inclusion of the ‘three
amigos’ Nathan Corby, Dean Bradley and Aaron Vitnell could see this team emerged as the summer’s surprise packet.
Pure speed will be X Rated’s greatest weapon in the new format, with Steve Close, Ashley and James Minehan and Ryan Miller among the quickest
players in the competition.
Dylan Berkrey and Zac Scholtz will bring some stability to the centre field, while Darrell Slaven will take on the role of team mentor.
The draw for tomorrow night’s first round of matches appears on page 9 of today’s edition.
