THEY are the two teams that many predicted would meet in this year’s C grade men’s touch football grand final, however that salivating clash appears a long way off.
Coota Hotel Old Boys scored their first win in four rounds last week when they accounted for the struggling Stock 3-1 to remain on track for a top four
finish, while Family Brothers continue to lose ground on the leaders following a two-try loss at the hands of Globe Barbarians.
Colin Slater kick started the match for Old Boys with an early try and was quickly joined on the scoresheet by Mick Bucknell who made a welcome return to the side, while Robert Spencer got himself off the dreaded duck when he added the third.
The Stock boys battled hard all night and their efforts were rewarded when Matt Holt was able to pierce the defence, Holt, like Spencer, celebrating his first try of the season.
In their defence Brothers were
without several of their big name players and, according to the scoresheet, had no subs to call on as they did battle with Barbarians on ground five.
However, the Globe side can lay claim to being the form team of the competition at present and would have rated their chances against a full strength opposition.
Joe Ciccia, Shaun Montgomery and Javis Singleton crossed for the winners, with Ben Brown also listed among their best, while Steve Cross was the only Brother to find the line.
Jim Roberts, Jack Baldock and Luke Johnson also tried hard against the odds.
Grog Hogs, who went into the match in eighth-place on the nine team ladder, weren’t expected to be able to match it with the top run Geckos, however with their big three all together on the same night, Grog Hogs were able to hold on for a three-all draw.
Andrew Smart, Adam Schnell and Jarrod Loiterton all added one try to their tallies to now boast six, five and four for the season respectively and between them account for 15 of Grog Hogs’ 25 tries.
It is a similar story for Geckos with Jay White and Mat Hoy having contributed 15 of Geckos’ 14 touchdowns for the season, White getting a double last week and Hoy a single.
Others to impress included Ralph Hotston and Tom Large for Grog Hogs and Sam Jennings and Scott James for Geckos.
A Bevan Collins treble was the
difference in the early game on ground six as Cool Runnings held out a
determined Hurley 4-3.
Twice during the first half of the match Hurley led by one with Elliott Gehrig scoring first and Sam Baldock the third try of the match to bookend Collins’ first.
Luke Johnson got Runnings back on an even keel and Collins’ second saw his team take the lead for the first time in the match, however when Charlie Annetts scored for Hurley it was all square again and game on.
It was only fitting that Collins provided the winner for Cool Runnings, his third taking his season tally to 11.
A reminder to all players that this week’s matches will be played on Friday night on account of Australia Day falling on Thursday.
