COOTA Hotel Old Boys had their perfect record in this year’s C grade men’s touch competition blighted slightly when they were held to a three-all draw by another genuine premiership contender The Geckos last week.
As a result Old Boys drop back into a share of the lead on 14 points, a total matched by Cool Runnings, while Family Brothers, who had the bye last week, are third on 13 followed by Geckos on 12 in what is a congested ladder.
The order of tries wasn’t listed on the scoresheet, however what is known is that Col Slater was the
go-to man for Brothers as he was the only multiple scorer for the match with two, while Dale Thompson crossed for a crucial touchdown.
Geckos replied through Matt Hoy, Jay White and Sam Jennings, while Adam New and Chris Luck made the list of best players, as did David Large and Todd Cowled for Old Boys.
A three try effort from Bevan Collins was the
difference in the 4-1 result against the winless Grog Hogs.
Collins was the obvious choice for best on ground and was closely followed by Tom McGregor, Alex Fuller and Mark Rogers who provided the other point for the winners.
Grog Hogs battled hard all night and were
rewarded when Jarrod Loiterton sliced his way through the defence, with Greg Sommerfield, Julian Jones and Adam Schell also having strong games.
Having broken their duck the previous week, Veterans made it two on the trot with a 9-4 triumph over Globe Barbarians in a match in which defence took a back seat to offence.
Scott Bridge and Michael Millar went try for try for the victors and couldn’t be separated at the end, both finishing with three, while Pat O’Toole, Mick Gay and Greg Ewings made up the balance with
singles.
Veterans would have been glad there was only one Michael Vesperman to contain for Barbarians as he provided all four touchdowns in an excellent display as Ryan Gould, Javis Singleton and Keegan McCabe added some support.
Elliott Gehrig took his new ‘streamlined’ look into the 6.30pm on ground six and it obviously didn’t affect his effectiveness as he starred for Hurley in the 4-3 win over Stock.
One of a number of Sacred Heart School students to lose their locks as part of the Shave for Leukemia fundraiser, Gehrig matched the entire Stock team’s tally of three, with Charlie Annetts adding what proved to be a vital try as well.
Oliver Quirk, Jake Walker and Brendan Moore impressed for the winners, while Sean Parker, Mark Makings and David McPherson bagged Stock’s tries.
All players are reminded games will be played this week and will resume in the New Year on January 12.
