Bulldogs sure to be pretty in pink

25 Aug, 2010 08:11 AM
REAL men do wear pink.

Well at least they will this weekend when the Cootamundra Bulldogs Rugby League Club throws its support behind the Onward to Oncology Appeal.

The Bulldogs face their moment of truth on Sunday, desperate to keep their semi final hopes alive when they play host to the Lavington Panthers at Fisher Park.

Local fans may have to do a double take when the Bulldogs stride out for their do-or-die encounter as the

traditional blue and white jumpers will be replaced by specially struck pink and blue jerseys.

The jumpers arrived in town this week and will certainly be a talking point among players and fans in the lead up to the weekend.

Each of the 21 jumpers has been individually sponsored by a local

business house, their name to appear on the front of the jersey, while the Bulldogs’ major sponsor the Coota Hotel will be emblazoned on the

back.

Following the match the jumpers will be collected, washed and then put up for auction at a special fundraising evening to be held at the Coota Hotel on Saturday, September 18.

“It is our club’s way of supporting the Oncology Appeal,” Bulldogs

secretary Mick Bucknell said.

“It is a cause the whole town is behind and as a football club we

wanted to jump on board as well.”

Bucknell said the jumpers will add extra interest to what will already be a big day for the club this weekend.

“We love to see a huge crowd come down and support us in our final home game for the season,” he said.

“The first grade side, which is literally made up entirely of locals, is fighting to stay in the top six and would love to have a vocal crowd cheering them on.

“Our leaguetag girls are also involved in the promotion and will be wearing pink socks for their last game of the year.”

Bucknell also suggested the Bulldogs’ faithful get behind the cause by wearing pink as well.

“It would be great to see splashes of pink in the crowd all supporting the oncology committee that has been working hard to secure a specialized facility for the town,” he said.

The auction night is open to

everyone, with the jumpers set to become collectors’ items.

“We’ve had great interest already from people wanting to buy jumpers at the auction and every cent raised from the auction will go directly to the oncology committee,’ Bucknell said.
