FULL BOOK FOR COOTA BEACH

“IF you build it they will come”.

It’s not only the most recognised quote from American cult movie Field Of Dreams, it is often used to instill confidence in what may be considered an unorthodox venture.

The organisers of the Cootamundra Beach Volleyball Carnival have every reason to adopt the mantra after another astonishing response to this year’s weekend.

Not only did the 96 available places fill up well before the cut off date, there are at least 20 sweating on a place on the waiting list and the same amount again who have made enquiries after the house full sign went up.

Co-organiser of the event Janine Cross said she was again blown away by the response.

“It’s amazing,” she said, “we thought last year might have been the peak when we filled the places before nominations closed, but there has been even greater demand this year.

“I think the more teams that play in the carnival, especially from out of town, the more the word gets around.

“There’s at least 20 teams on the waiting list and we’ve had as many phone calls or emails from other sides who want to be part of it.

“We could easily put in another 30 teams.”

There was a brief pause on the phone before Janine corrected

herself.

“Let me rephrase that, we could put another 30 teams in if we had the space and time to do so, but we are absolutely thrilled to have filled up the teams list so early.”

Janine said a quick breakdown of the 96 nominations reveals 45 local regulars, at least five in which an ex-Coota resident is bringing a side to town, 23 genuine out of town teams and more than 20 new teams.

“We think it’s an excellent mix,” Janine said.

“The high number of new teams is a bonus as it proves the word about Coota beach is being spread far and wide and now it’s all systems go as the carnival is only four weekends away after this weekend.

“Saying that out loud makes it scary, but I’m sure we’ll be ready.”

The carnival is run by a small, but dedicated committee who are grateful for any outside help they receive over the course of the weekend, however Janine said she’d gladly welcome more hands on deck.

“People don’t have to join the committee or go to meetings, but

anyone who can spare us a couple of hours as we set up on the Friday afternoon and pack up after the final game on Sunday would be most welcome,” she said.

Considering what the annual Beach Volleyball Carnival does for this town - that is not too much to ask.
