Cootamundra Community Chest president Marion Millar said that the group made the sad decision to fold at its recent AGM, where it was not able to get an executive.
Community Chest was committed to providing financial assistance for people with serious heart, lung and kidney medical problems.
As a result the dedicated group of volunteers donated the remaining funds they had worked tirelessly to raise to several worthy causes.
In addition to the nursing home internal sprinkler appeal, Community Chest also gave $500 to the SES and Cootamundra Day Care and $5045 to the Cootamundra Hospital – fulfilling everything on the hospital’s wish list that was provided to the group.
Mrs Millar said while the current members of the organisation felt incredibly sad at the decision to fold, they are very proud of what they have achieved and the ability to give these final donations to those that need it.
If you ask Mrs Millar and her committee what they have found most satisfying about the past five years the answer is simple – “helping people”.
The list of assistance is long, but among the ways the organisation has provided assistance is paying for oxygen machines for people who need them, helping with transport costs for people travelling for kidney dialysis three days a week, helping one patient pay for their lung transplant, helping people financially with heart problems, paying for specialist visits and filling the financial gaps in medical expenses.
“It has been very rewarding,” Mrs Millar said.
Mrs Millar took the opportunity to thank the people of Cootamundra for their generosity over the years in supporting their fundraising activities.
“We couldn’t have done it without them,” Mrs Millar said.
The enormous $40,000 donation was greatly appreciated by the nursing home, with Cootamundra Nursing Home Board chairperson Judy Braybrooks thanking the group.
“Their presentation of a $40,000 cheque for the Internal Fire Sprinkler Fund is just wonderful and will give a great boost to the required target,” Mrs Braybrooks said.
“I’d like to extend a very big thankyou to the Cootamundra Community Chest members for the donation and congratulate the group on their achievement in fundraising that benefited so many people in the Cootamundra community,” Mrs Braybrooks said.
The SES used the funds to purchase paint to paint its new training room, Day Care used the money to buy a dishwasher, while the hospital bought new chairs which move up and down aiding patient comfort and making life easier for staff. The hospital also purchased Pulse Oximetry units.
