ON Monday, February 10 2014 I attended the monthly Council meeting to support the Nursing Home request for a donation from the Council towards the sprinkler system for the nursing home – a requirement which is now mandatory for all nursing homes.
What a wasted effort that was as far as I am concerned. For starters, I, and my colleagues felt most unwelcome – all we received in my opinion from the mayor and general manager were glaring stares when we arrived, no word of welcome or any acknowledgement whatsoever of our presence. It was so embarrassing.
Then, I and others could not hear a word that was said with every councillor and the mayor mumbling their way through the meeting. The only councillor we could hear was Councillor Donnelly and she had the sense to use the microphone which it appeared every other councillor had access to but chose not to use.
When Mrs Braybrooks requested that councillors speak up so we could all hear, nothing changed. I had to ask the lady who drove me home after the meeting what the council decision was with regard to the sprinkler system funding and she said she did not know because she also could not hear.
I think our local council has a lot to learn as far as manners and being able to be heard at meeting is concerned.
We all came away feeling very disillusioned about our council.
