COOTAMUNDRA lost two lovely gentlemen over the weekend with Dudley Loiterton and Mick Purtell both passing away.
Dudley, 94 years old, lived life to the full and was perhaps best known for his love of a round of golf.
I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Dudley in August 2012 when at 93 years of age he was still a regular at veteran’s golf.
What a lovely man he was – a true gentleman and a great bloke.
He played golf for the best part of 60 years, picking up a club for the first time at 35.
I love this story: When he and wife Val decided to build a house in town in 1968 all Dudley wanted was a block on which he could walk to the golf course once he retired. That was his main requirement and he was content to leave the rest of the decisions to Val!
Dudley was a life member of the Cootamundra Golf Club and widely respected around the club.
A funeral for Dudley will be held today in the Christ Church, Anglican Church at noon.

While I didn’t have the honour of meeting Mick, I hear now Mick Purtell was the backbone of the Cootamundra Old Time Dance Group and by all accounts a wonderful man.
He was devoted to his family with many members of the Purtell family still calling Cootamundra home. Recently he was a resident of the Cootamundra Nursing Home and just a couple of weeks ago enjoyed an outing to the Pink Stumps Cricket Day along with his buddies from the nursing home to cheer on grandson Josh.
Mick was 79 when he passed away. His funeral will be held this Thursday at 2pm at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Condolences to both the Loiterton and Purtell families on their loss.
Splendid day
THE Cootamundra Catholic Community turned out on the weekend to mark the installation of Father Joshy Kurien as Parish Priest of Cootamundra.
The church and later the presbytery grounds were packed to the rafters with some 250 people gathering for the occasion.
Father Joshy comes to Cootamundra from Queanbeyan so there were a strong number of people from the Canberra Catholic community in attendance.
Born in India, his Indian connection was a highlight of the day with members of the Indian community from Canberra and Wagga turning out in force to put on a delicious feast for all in attendance.
The new Archbishop of the Canberra/Goulburn Archdiocese Christopher Prowse attended on Sunday to install Father Joshy into his new role. The Archbishop impressed all when he was found behind the serving table following mass.
What a wonderful day – certainly one to remember.
Show success
THE Cootamundra High School show team has enjoyed a successful weekend at the Canberra Show.
The students were involved in cattle parading and bring home with them a number of ribbons.
Congratulations to all involved for doing Coota proud. Look out for a full story on the Show Team success in a coming edition of the Herald.
Birthday wishes
HAPPY birthday to Sammy Pigram for yesterday. Sammy, who turned 17, celebrated with friends at Hennessy Catholic College.
Sammy is the daughter of Judy and David and no doubt older siblings Megan and Scott will spoil her.
Sammy celebrated with her mum, nan Laura Allen, Megan, Scott and his pregnant wife Jaimi with lunch at the Terracotta in Harden over the weekend.
