In a huge coup for her current hometown of Bega, Brodie has been named 2014 Sydney Royal Showgirl, meanwhile Karney has been busy junior judging and was awarded an Agricultural Society Council Scholarship at the show.
Speaking at the amphitheatre following her sashing, Brodie described the Showgirl experience as “the best time of my life”.
Brodie, with her boyfriend Kevin, currently lease a dairy farm in Bega and have purchased their own herd of cows which they are milking. She has been on the south coast for around 18 months.
Her initial interest in agriculture was born on the property of parents Michael and Jo and she hasn’t looked back going from strength to strength in the industry.
Brodie, who is a former Cootamundra High School captain, was a part of the Coota High Show Team for many years attending shows with cattle.
She has been involved in showing cattle and junior judging at country shows since she was 11-years-old so the Showgirl journey was a natural step as she became older.
Brodie told those present at the announcement she was thrilled with the honour and true to good naturedness joked “I certainly didn’t think a crazy cowgirl would win The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl!”
“Girls to me we are all winners and I thank you for the amazing experience you’ve given me, it’s been the best time of my life,” Brodie said.
For Karney, she participated in junior judging of the National Junior Australian Stockhorse event on Saturday morning and last Friday night attended a prestigious dinner at the Courtyard Hotel in North Ryde as part of the process.
“It was great to sit down with board members of the Australian Stockhorse Society and meet the other competitors,” Karney said.
The scholarship is through the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies and sponsored by Coca Cola.
To be selected Karney had to write about her involvement with the Show Society and be a member of her local Show Society here in Cootamundra.
As part of the scholarship she was awarded $2000 to put towards her studies in any way she likes.
Karney plans to put the funds towards travel as she is currently studying a bachelor of Agriculture Science at Charles Sturt University in Wagga and living in Cootamundra.
“Overall it’s been a fantastic weekend and to achieve the results we did was really the best possible outcome we could have hoped for,” Karney said.
Congratulations to both Brodie and Karney on their successes at the show. If anyone else is competing at the Sydney Royal please be in touch by calling 6942 1488 or email jennette.lees@fairfaxmedia.com.au.
