First grade coach Luke Dickinson couldn’t be happier with the way his side played, although said the scoreline was reflective of the fact South Wagga was not fielding a high quality side.
Cootamundra spent most of the game in the opposition half putting plenty of pressure on South Wagga from the outset.
This resulted in a 5-nil scoreline by halftime and the Strikers were well on their way to a successful day on the paddock.
“We definitely take a bit of confidence out of this win moving forward,” Dickinson said.
He said it was very much an all-round team effort by the Strikers with everyone doing their bit, however the usual powerhouses of Adam McPhail, Bevan Collins and Brenton Forsyth all stood up well.
In goal for the Strikers, Mick Simons, in his 301st game, had a quiet day with not a lot of game time spent in the Strikers’ own half.
“The first half wasn’t as good for the boys and they needed to hold their structure well, which they were able to do better in the second half,” Dickinson said.
After a long weekend bye over Easter this weekend, the boys will look to take their good form into what is likely to be a tough match against Tumut at Tumut.
“They won their first two games so it won’t be easy but we know what we need to do,” Dickinson said.
He praised the Football Wagga competition this year stating that one of the best things about it is the even standard of teams.
As well as the traditional teams from Wagga, which have a host of players to choose from and generally dominate the competition this year many country towns are also fielding teams such as Junee, Tumut, Temora and of course Coota.
“It makes it a more even playing field,” Dickinson said.
The boys trained last night, however get a night off training tomorrow as they do not play this weekend.
Attention instead turns to the annual Cootamundra B and S Ball this weekend, which the Strikers Soccer Club is hosting.
Vehicles are likely to start arriving for the B and S on Friday night with the ball itself to be held at the showground on Saturday night.
