7.25 Cootamundra: IT was one of the most contentious Cootamundra Shire Council mayoral elections seen in years but in the end the top two jobs remain unchanged with Councillor Jim Slattery named mayor and Councillor Dennis Palmer deputy.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has left open the possibility that Australia's attacks on Islamic State militants could spread across the Iraq border into the terror group's heartland in Syria.
The US, which is leading the Middle East mission, has committed to strikes against Islamic State in Syria, but Mr Abbott indicated on Tuesday that Australia will wait for the resolution of legal uncertainties before taking such action.

The death of Casey Braxton on Home and Away sent viewers into a fit of anger and sadness on social media. Casey's murder was shown on Monday night with Tuesday focusing on the brothers' reaction to his death.
