Whilst the rainfall wasn’t quite as good as hoped Richard said the course is holding up well and everything is ready ahead of schedule for the annual meet.
He’s hopeful this weekend will prove the biggest yet for Cootamundra as entrants make their way here from around the state.
“There have been big fields around lately and I’ve spoken to quite a few trainers who are heading Coota way,” he said.
Recent additions to the racecourse include a female jockey change room and solar panels to power the bore pump all year round, which will allow Richard to keep the track in good shape over summer.
Cootamundra Turf Club has also announced the return of a $5000 bonus for the trainer who wins the main race and two other races.
If this feat is not achieved then $2000 will be awarded to the leading trainer on the day.
Richard went to Grenfell Jockey Club Races last weekend to give two of his horses a fitness run in time for their home track appearance.
“They ran pretty well and they try hard, which is all I ask of a horse,” he said.
Zanity has been nominated for the benchmark 50 1400m and Jack I Am in the maiden 1400m and class one maiden 1600m.
Last year Richard trained Vindough Boy, the winner of the 1400m maiden plate.
It was an especially sweet victory for Cootamundra racing as the horse is owned by Turf Club president Brad Shields.
Tickets are still available for the XXXX Gold Marquee from the Central Hotel, $90 covering entry, food and drink throughout the day.
The family-friendly day will also be over in time for the NRL grand final kick off, and courtesy buses will be available.
