The Hawks took glory by 63 points - 137-74. Ahead by 20 points at quarter time they never looked back going on with the job much to the delight of all local Hawthorn supporters!
Sydney went into the game favourites after a strong preliminary final win but were unable to find that same form on Saturday. In the end they could not apply the same pressure they did back in the 2012 grand final between the Hawks and Swans with their tackle count almost half what it was two seasons ago.
While his team had the underdog status, Smith was confident leading into Saturday the Hawks had what it took to claim victory.
The win puts Smith and the Hawks in an elite group of back to back premiership wins.
How is this for an impressive start to an AFL career, the following stats belonging to Smith, who completed his education here at Sacred Heart Central School, never giving up hope of one day playing in the national league:
- Games: 86
- Goals: 79
- Finals: 12
- Grand Finals: 3
- Premierships: 2
