The seminar is a collaboration between Soroptimist International Cootamundra and Andrew Finch, a qualified Instructor in Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts.
It fits perfectly into the Soroptimist International philosophy of empowering and uplifting women.
The hour and a half long ‘hands on’ lesson will aim to provide women and girls 12 years and over with practical skills to get themselves out of trouble.
While the basics of self defence are an important skill for any woman, young and old, the biggest piece of advice offered by Andrew to participants is to do your best to avoid dangerous situations.
The workshop is designed to make women feel safer when out as well as improve self-esteem and fitness.
The idea behind the workshop is that by knowing how to defend yourself a girl or woman will not have to.
The theory is that as a person becomes more confident in their ability to defend themselves through martial arts training, they unconsciously begin to carry themselves in a more confident manner and that confidence is projected to those around them making them less vulnerable to predatory behaviour.
On top of that martial arts teaches how to recognise a potentially dangerous situation and how to avoid confrontations.
Participants who attended the last evening were impressed with the DVD presentation, followed by some very basic grappling techniques on how to use a potential attacker’s weight against them.
It is set to be a fun environment and if participants can take just one thing away from the seminar the job of Andrew and the Soroptimist branch will be complete.
This informative evening will take place on Monday, October 13 in the Cootamundra Public School Hall, commencing at 7pm at a cost of $10 per person.
