The long weekend attracted many people back into Cootamundra including one of the town’s most talented sportsmen of the late 1960s, early 1970s.
Peter Asimus and his wife Laurel were back in town to attend a High School reunion and met up with many former acquaintances during their short stay.
Both Peter and Laurel were teachers at the High School before leaving in 1974 to embark on a new adventure by taking on a newsagency at Manly Vale.
After a successful transition, the pair decided on another venture by building a tennis complex at Maroochydore in Queensland ... this venture lasting 16 years.
Laurel took over the running of the Buderim Ginger Shop, another successful venture and the pair remained there until their retirement.
During the 1960s Peter was Coota’s top tennis player, winning the A-grade championship on several occasions, he was an above average golfer, top Australian Rules footballer and played in several premiership winning squash teams.
Peter was also a member of the strong Colts Merrin Cup cricket team which won premierships in 1966, 1967 and 1969.
While here for the weekend Peter was joined by Phil Moon, Greg Rudd and Clarrie Power for a game of golf, the older players Peter and Clarrie taking on the young guns Greg and Phil.
It was a great reunion for four old cricket playing mates who participated in those three Merrin Cup premiership winning teams so long ago.
During his time in Coota Peter was also a member of a band which included Kevin McArthur (drums), Bob Cowle (piano), Alan Jenkins (trombone), Peter Murphy (saxophone) and David Murphy (trumpet).
Peter played the clarinet.
MANY THANKS to Clarrie Power for the above contribution.
