Usually we are unable to repay their hard work and dedication, but earlier this month Wear Orange Wednesday, or WOW Day, presented the opportunity to show our appreciation.
WOW Day is recognised throughout Australia each year as a day to wear orange in order to show support for our SES workers.
This year the day also coincided with university student Tennille West’s practical placement at Stockinbingal Public School.
Tennille has been an SES member for two years in Sydney and now Temora, and organised with principal Colin Trickett for students to wear orange and bring in a gold coin donation.
Tennille also brought in her personal protective equipment gear and spare uniforms for the children to wear, did a brief talk about the role of the SES, and handed out SES bracelets, balloons and phone covers.
“The day is about promoting awareness of our services and the work we do for local communities,” Tennille said.
“Me being there also promotes that volunteers come from all walks of life.”
Tennille has now finished her placement at Stockinbingal Public School but says it was an amazing experience that helped to develop her passion to teach, and the smaller class sizes allowed her to focus on teaching rather than behavioural management.
“I was very privileged to be exposed to the opportunity to delve into new 21st century teaching skills and strategies,” Tennille said.
Stockinbingal Public School teacher Linden Webber said the school and the families were going to miss Tennille.
“She is going to make a wonderful teacher,” Linden said.
“She is caring and committed to improving her student’s learning in all areas and really got to know the students and families at Stockinbingal.”
Linden listed some memorable moments with Tennille, including helping relieve the stress of students and staff with a creative science activity, and always being keen to support students with special needs during the summer swim school session.
“All staff and students at Stockinbingal wish her the very best in her teaching future.”
