Karl Stefanovic, co-presenter of the Nine Network's Today program, wore the blue suit for 12 months, making a not-so-subtle point about the unfair scrutiny to which his female colleagues are subjected.

Only after a year in which no one noticed or commented did Stefanovic reveal his cheeky experiment and then announced he would auction the well-worn suit, with proceeds to go to White Ribbon.

The cheap Burberry "knock-off" was optimistically listed on eBay as "super comfy, super stylish, super cool".

"Imagine how good you'd look in it," frothed the tongue-in-cheek advertisement, which also noted the item was "a little bit stanky" after a year under the studio lights and could use an urgent dry clean.

Appropriately, the auction ended on Tuesday, which is designated as White Ribbon Day and has seen hundreds of events round the country in support of the campaign.

Last week, Stefanovic told Fairfax Media how strongly he felt about the issue of violence against women.

"This issue need to be addressed from the highest levels of society in terms of the law and the way our perpetrators are sentenced," he said. "There needs to be greater punishment.

"It needs to stop and it needs to stop now, and men need to play a role in all of that."

Stefanovic's suit stunt made headlines around the world and he was broadly congratulated for his stand against the sexism in television.
