The Hardie family have taken out the final of the NSW Agricultural Societies Council dryland field wheat competition.
The Suntop variety wheat on their Stirling property won the district and regional level of the competition in late November, and on Wednesday evening the family travelled to Forbes as the southern zone winners.
Steve and Louanda Hardie and their sons Grahame, Alex and Berkeley were all present as district agronomist and state judge Paul Parker announced they had officially produced the best dryland field wheat crop in NSW.
“We are all pretty stoked, it’s a nice thing to win,” Steve said.
“It was a very close competition, there were only one or two points between us and second place.”
Louanda said the announcement was an exciting moment for the whole family.
“They certainly deserve it, they have put a lot of hard work into it,” she said.
That hard work included finishing harvest before recent rain events, meaning the boys will now be able to relax over Christmas before work resumes later in January.
They will no doubt be looking to enjoy the fruits of their labour, which includes several prizes for their award-winning crop.
For winning the regional level of the competition the family received a plaque and ribbon, as well as a cheque and hamper.
For winning the state level they received another ribbon and cheque, as well as an engraved plate and a spot on the state shield.
