The tide changed as the Year Seven boys joined forces this year for the first time, with Digby swimming, Max running and Joe on the bike.
“It’s easier to focus on one skill, we didn’t have to save up energy through the whole race,” Max said.
Impressively the trio won the high school aged section of the triathlon.
“I wasn’t expecting to win, I thought we’d be up against big people,” Digby said.
They were the youngest team in the competition, defying the odds and crossing the finish line at 24 minutes and 25 seconds.
The second place runner was hot on Max’s heels, crossing the line just 14 seconds later.
The boys love their sport however most of the training they do isn’t triathlon-specific; Max plays AFL, Digby goes to swimming training and plays rugby union, and Joe plays cricket in summer and rugby union.
The boys are school friends at Sacred Heart, and as they met at school and reflected on the event, you couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces.
They were clearly proud of their achievement.
“Hopefully we can do it again each year,” Joe said.
