They loved tasting crocodile and kangaroo created into regular meals they may enjoy at home including a mild curry and rice dish and pasta.
While Naidoc Week is next week, it was decided to mark the important occasion early.
Mission Australia’s Colina Meadows and Aboriginal community volunteers Paula and Marney Maher together with Canadian guest Becky Carruthers began the day talking to the kids about the traditional fare there were about to tuck into.
They discussed the dietary needs and traditions of indigenous Australians before whipping up a feast involving Skippy bolognaise and Thai green crocodile curry.
“We wanted to give them something traditional prepared in such a way it looked like something they had eaten before and were willing to try,” Colina said.
There were a few concerned faces as kids chose between the two dishes, however almost all were pleasantly surprised.
The verdict from one child: “It tastes just like normal bologaise, really great and lots of flavour!”
Most of the kids tried one or the other dish, some sampling both.
Vacation Care runs out of the AFL hall for the duration of the school holidays.
