Scammers will call claiming to represent either the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions or Australian Tax Office, and pressure the victim to provide payment.
Cootamundra LAC crime prevention officer Pete Guthrie said anyone not completely sure whether a call is legitimate should contact the police.
Known scams should also be reported to police and Scamwatch on 1300 795 995.
