The last Wednesday of each August is National Meals on Wheels Day.
The vital service has been operating for almost 50 years in Cootamundra and according to Meals on Wheels coordiantor Kerry Kostrubic, the volunteers provide far more than just a warm meal.
“They nourish, strengthen and care for communities by delivering delicious and nutritious ready-to-eat meals, providing important social contact to people who may be isolated and lonely, as well as monitoring the physical and psychological well being of those most vulnerable,” Mrs Kostrubic said.
“Meals on Wheels services build strong relationships with consumers and their volunteer teams.”
The theme for the celebration this year was “Feels Good, Does Good” and the feedback from volunteers and consumers alike is testament to its accuracy.
Eve Barrett started using the service after a fall at home rendered her unable to drive or do grocery shopping.
“It gives me a sense of independence,” Ms Barrett said.
“I don’t have to rely on my family. I am eating more than I would if I had to cook for myself and I am getting a better variety of meals.”
Ms Barrett expressed her gratitude to the friendly volunteers; a sentiment echoed by Fae Elich.
“The volunteers are always friendly, they have a lovely little chat,” Ms Elich said.
“The outings are always something I look forward to with a bus full of happy people. We always go somewhere interesting.
“For me they provide an opportunity to venture outside the town and enjoy good company and see the changing countryside.”
The volunteers agree that the service gives a sense of fulfilment, and they also enjoy the social side.
“It feels good to give back to the community and make a social connection with those people who you haven’t seen for a long time, but cannot get out,” Ruth Thorburn said.
“It enables you to maintain that social contact and give those most vulnerable in our town a sense of security.”
Ruth and Eric are joined by fellow husband and wife team Win and Jim Main, who have been volunteering for about 28 years now.
According to the pair, delivering meals to those who need it “is one of the most satisfying things that you can do.”
“Communication with the elderly is very important to ensure their health and their safety.”
The community service is also supported by volunteers from local businesses and organisations including Twomeys, JMA Legal, Landmark, Cootamundra Shire Council, Dawson and Partners, Elouera, Cootamundra Holden, Lion’s Club, Antique Motor Club, CADAS Kids and Girl Guides.
