While all eyes were on the Liberal party leadership spill last Monday evening, the Cootamundra Herald Facebook page was full of readers complaining about the re-election of mayor Jim Slattery.

A lot has been said on social media over the past week regarding Jim’s appointment, not all of it fit for print.

Funnily enough, none of these opinionated people were anywhere to be seen at the council meeting.

Anyone who has actually taken to the time to get to know our mayor would realise he is community-minded man who works hard for this town.

When he serves at the soup kitchen every Wednesday he’s not there to press palms, he’s behind the scenes washing dishes.

Doug Phillips was a wonderful mayor and remains an excellent shire councillor, but for their own reasons, the majority of our councillors prefer to have Jim as their mayor.

For every other month of the year, we trust our elected representatives to serve our best interests.

That much is evident from the fact that you can usually count the public attendance to monthly council meetings on one hand.

Maybe the residents who all of sudden claim to distrust these councillors should start getting involved instead of taking shots from the safety of their keyboard.
