The Canberra Raiders Cup back-to-back premiers were in the market for signings across the park after losing five marquee players to retirement.
Blues coach and former Canberra Raiders captain Simon Woolford met with Berkrey and Rupapere last night to complete the move.
The announcement is another blow to the Cootamundra Bulldogs, who are still looking for a first grade coach not to mention a squad.
“It’s good to know I’m secure but I still hope to see Coota find what they’re looking for and get on the right track,” Berkrey said.
“It will be good to focus on playing and not have to worry about everything that comes with being captain-coach.
“Outside influence doesn’t bother me, I just want to do well for my new club.”
Rupapere said his family has settled in well in Cootamundra and he was not looking for a new club, but could not pass on the chance.
“It’s a new opportunity and I decided to grab it with both hands,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge, to learn more under an experienced coach and seize the opportunity.”
Woolford signed Rupapere purely on reputation.
His contacts in the Queensland Cup confirmed the talented number nine would be a good choice.
“We lost two halves and a hooker so we need a player to fill both those roles, depending on who else we sign. Shan fits that mould from what I’ve heard,” he said.
“Luke can play in the middle or the edge, I like those types of players in my squad.
“He’s a worker who will put in big minutes and has that versatility we’re looking for.”
Woolford indicated the Blues are still looking for two or three more signings to round out their squad.
He does not think the former Bulldogs will struggle with the transition from Group Nine to the Raiders Cup.
“They will just need time to get used to how we do things. Travel is obviously a factor, they won’t be at every training session but I expect they will fit in easily.
“I have the utmost confidence in both players.”
