Listing is no guarantee
The Cootamundra Council advises us all that the Old Cootamundra Hospital is safe and secure by being listed as a local heritage building on our LEP.

I am afraid to say that this does not appear to be so to me. The old facade of the swimming pool was listed on the local LEP, was it not? I am informed that it was listed twice and twice it was removed. There is a building in Cootamundra that was listed on the local LEP, but after representations were made by the owners of the building to the Cootamundra Shire Council to have the building removed from the LEP list, this request was granted.
It is quite clear to me that an LEP listing does not necessarily secure any building or structure’s future.
In this instance I am not condemning or approving the listings to or removal from LEP mentioned above. I am simply pointing out that it can be easily done.
Mayor Slattery has stated that the building is in a solid condition and having been inside the building I agree with him. I have no desire to save Memorial Wing, nor has anyone expressed such a desire to me. Memorial Wing is not included in the submission to the NSW State Heritage Office.
Councillors tell us that they will not allow the Old Hospital to be demolished. That is most commendable of them, but we all must remember that councils and councillors come and go. There is only one way this building can be secured for the future and that is by its listing with the NSW Heritage Office. The guide lines for Heritage Listing are very stringent, so even though the application has been lodged, there is no guarantee that it will be successful.

Doing the walk of life
On February 7 I will be walking through Cootamundra as I walk around Australia.
The Happy Walk is a 16,000km solo walk without support vehicles, raising funds for Lifeline Australia’s 24/7 mental health crisis hotline, 13 11 14, and raising awareness about suicide prevention, finding help and recovery. I am a 44-year-old woman, who has been walking for two years and more than 9400km along the most remote and scenic stretches of National Highway 1.
In 2016 I will walk another 7000km completing a scenic lap of Australia before December.
Pushing my bright yellow and blue custom-built barrow, nicknamed Dory, beside the road Terra carries an important message about hope, reaching out for help and talking about mental illness, suicide and Lifeline. In the hope it encourages others to hold onto hope in their darkest days knowing they are not alone and things will get better she shares her own story of discovering joy and learning to love life after trying to take her own life in 2010.
Terra has chosen Lifeline as her fundraising cause to thank them for helping her after she phoned 13 11 14, their 24/7 crisis hotline, when she relapsed during the first year of recovery from depression and complex post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
