Adam Mark Perrim is before Wagga District Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to aggravated dangerous driving causing death, furious driving causing grievous bodily harm, unlicensed driving and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
Perrim, 20, was the driver of a Holden station wagon that crashed near Wallendbeen on May 14 last year, killing 20-year-old Ricki-Lee Atkinson and badly injuring another woman.
Police had attempted to stop the station wagon on the Olympic Highway at Cootamundra about 7pm.
Perrim refused to stop and police initiated a pursuit which was called off for safety reasons.
Soon after, the station wagon crashed into a culvert.
Ricki-Lee, a back passenger, died at the scene.
Victim impact statements were read to Judge Stephen Norrish on Thursday afternoon.
As Perrim sat in the dock, a support worker for Ricki-Lee’s family read out statements on behalf of the dead woman’s mother, two brothers and sister.
“You have stolen my sister and destroyed our family because Ricki-Lee was the rock in our family and always found a way to bring us back together,” brother John Atkinson, 20, wrote in his statement.
Sister Samantha Atkinson spoke of the fun she had with her sister, who did her hair and make-up. “Now I have no one to talk to, I miss all the things we did,” 15-year-old Samantha wrote.
Brother Lance Atkinson said his sister’s death broke his heart. “I wish she was here so I could give her a kiss and hug and show her how much I love her,” the 16-year-old wrote.
Mum Leanne wrote of the pain of a parent losing a child, while step-father Matthew Johnson read his statement from the witness box. “I still have a lot of anger,” Mr Johnson said.
Judge Norrish has suspended the sentencing process while he waits for a pre-sentence report, but told the court Perrim was facing a substantial jail term.
