The boys had a sluggish start but once they got their game together, points flowed.
The managed three tries in the first half, all going the way of the youngest of the Hardie brigade, Berkeley.
He was able to run rings around the opposition leading to his trio of tries; a well deserved reward for the effort he puts in at training and on game day.
Coach Mick Gay was pleased to see his troops regroup mid-way through the first half.
“We had a pretty slow start but after we settled down, we started to play good football again; we got back to our structure and we came away with a 25-9 win,” Gay said.
Other standout players from Cootamundra, according to Gay, included front rowers Craig Friend and Josh Hudson.
There is never a backwards step from these two, who aren’t afraid to put their body on the line.
Alex Hardie, Willie Purcell and Phil Gay also had good games.
Moving from the Southern Inland competition to the Central West has breathed new life into the Cootamundra Rugby Club.
The team has benefited from only having to field one men’s side and the addition of a women’s team has brought new supporters to the club.
While the boys looked solid, the girls continue to learn and on Saturday went down 88-nil.
In their first season of rugby, all game time is an opportunity for the girls to improve their skills and they will back up again.
The boys’ win keeps them in second place on the Central West Graincorp Southern Division ladder with three wins and just one loss this season.
If we can start to put 80 minutes of football together week in, week out then we can really show this competition what we can do.
- Coach Mick Gay
Ahead of them is the undefeated Temora side while Grenfell, Condobolin and West Wyalong all sit on one win each.
The Tricolours will take a well earned rest this week with a general bye across the competition before taking on Temora away on May 14.
With a fortnight away from competitive rugby, Gay is looking to work on the fitness of his players as well as their discipline around the breakdown.
