Supermarket shelves are noticeably empty of branded milk and Greycat Enterprises which delivers Riverina Fresh milk locally confirmed they have had to increase their order to Woolworths.
Today, Friday, the delivery company will supply 56 crates of Riverina Fresh milk, some 20 more than usual.
With each crate containing nine two-litre bottles, this is a significant shift.
Greycat Enterprises’ Graham Marshall said milk is delivered fresh each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and he has noticed a marked increase in demand over the past fortnight since a national campaign to boycott dollar a litre milk began.
NSW Farmers has commended consumers for getting behind the initiative.
Dairy Committee Chair Rob McIntosh said dollar a litre milk is “simply unsustainable” for the dairy industry.
"We've had enormous anecdotal support from the public over that past few weeks as consumers have become aware exactly what $1 litre milk means to our dairy farmers," Mr McIntosh said.
"Consumers are voting with their wallet and buying more proprietary brands; sending a message to our major supermarkets that Australians value the sustainability of our farmers and they are willing to pay a few cents more for milk to ensure family farms continue to be viable,” he continued.
In Cootamundra, Premier Early Learning Centre is joining other Affinity Education centres to support Australian dairy farmers by purchasing only Riverina Fresh branded milk.
They are also teaching children where milk and other dairy products come from.
Centre Manager Danielle Wilson-McCaffery said it is an important initiative and she is encouraging all Premier families to purchase non-generic milk only.
“We are really lucky our children get to grow up in the country and see firsthand where their food comes from,” Ms Wilson-McCaffery said.
As well as giving children Riverina Fresh milk, Premier Early Learning also sources their fresh fruit, bread and meat from local businesses.
